This enlightening and entertaining book relates the rich history of three generations of the Barker family and their diverse enterprises during the 19th century. From the War of 1812 in the age of sail through the Civil War and the booming railroad industry, the story depicts their struggles for abolition and racial equality and their extensive business, political, and banking accomplishments. While relating the fascinating stories of these interesting and important historical figures, this well researched book presents a novel and intimate view of 19th century life in a growing and tumultuous America.
