Synopsis

Manufacturing operations management (MOM) is the methodologies, systems, and knowledge to manage manufacturing. It is highly data centric, requiring manufacturing (and quality) engineers to spend a lot of time collecting, aggregating, and analyzing data as part of analyzing the processes, products, and equipment. Even using Lean and Six Sigma tools, the data collection process is labor intensive and prone to error. This book was written to help MOM practitioners and students new to MOM to understand how to implement and utilize MES to optimize data collection and review, improve process efficiency, and ensure/improve product quality, thereby achieving the desired return on investment (ROI). In addition to reporting on the status of manufacturing execution in real time, an MES collects the required data without input from the production operator, analyzes that data in real time, and identifies patterns in that data that indicate a problem faster that any other operations methodology. It does all this while providing the most holistic view of the activities that must be monitored for real optimization of the manufacturing floor. When these capabilities are coupled with the MES ability to guide operators through the manufacturing process and ensure the availability of accurate information, there is potential for the MES to improve MOM by orders of magnitude (and that s not an exaggeration).
