Why Defining Generation Virtual Is so Important

Generation Virtual can be summed up easily in that it is a generation that embraces technology for both personal and professional interaction and is not necessarily based on demographics like age. But Generation V is so much more than the sum of its parts. There is far more to Generation Virtual's story than just who will join the workforce starting in 2025.

Generation Virtual is fundamentally changing the nature of work performance. They will work from home, but their way of life includes very different employments and interactions. Total immersion in a virtual world may not be far away, and this generation is ready.

Companies that use a virtual workforce will soon see many more qualified candidates because Generation Virtual will typically come prepared with skills necessary to properly handle technology and virtual environments. As such, this generation will need less training to be ready to take on tasks (Hill & Bartol, 2018). There will be variety, of course, but a beyond-the-basics understanding of technology is ingrained in this generation.

Technology is not a means to an end--only used when needed to perform specific tasks--with Generation V, it is simply a way of life. It has been seamlessly integrated into the fabric of their work and personal lives. Generation V also interacts differently with others, in ways forever changing the world (Hill & Bartol, 2018). For example, face-to-face interactions are not as necessary as they once were. Technology has altered how people are brought together, both socially and professionally, and Generation V has taken full advantage.

Generation Virtual is often seen as a workforce of young people, overly focused on technology. However, there are other ways to look at what this generation can provide organizations and their understanding of what it means to be social, work together, and develop work-life balance.

The virtual workforce continues to change and evolve in different ways (Hill & Bartol, 2018). What began as a small number of people on the outskirts of the working world, doing a few things for companies from their homes, has become an entire workforce of people doing their whole jobs from non-traditional workplaces (Hill & Bartol, 2018). More than that, Generation V has typically grown up using technology in a digital, virtual, and online life that is a significant part of who they are. Generation Virtual is far more than just an online workforce. Generation Virtual is a feeling, a collective, and a way of expressing oneself deeply rooted in how technology connects people and affects their lives.
