Walter J. Lummis is a freelance newsman, an American expatriate, who has spent his life covering the news in Asia. Now in his later years he has developed information about a plot involving China and North Korea, with Russia and Iran cooperating. A plot to destroy the US's democracy from within, eliminate its' influence in world affairs, and alter the world order by creating a single nation, comprised of all the nations of the world ruled by China. His' journey takes him to a number of Far East countries as he seeks out sources with knowledge of the plot, all the while being pursued by agents of North Korea's Ministry of State Security, MSS, who are out to kill him, before he can get the story on the front page of a leading US newspaper and earn a Pulitzer prize. Will Lummis reach his objective of publishing the story, or will the MSS kill him before he reaches his goal? The fate of Lummis, the United States, and the world order hangs in the balance.

Gerard Shirar is a twenty year veteran of the US Army serving in Army Intelligence. He is veteran of Korea and Vietnam and practiced law in the Boston area for many years before his retirement. He presently lives in a retirement comunity among pleasant surroundings and company. The China Paradox is his eighth novel.
China's Communist leadership is intent on fulfilling China's historic, long-standing, centuries-old desire for respect. With thousands of years of continuous history, China is among the world's oldest countries and is regarded as one of the cradles of civilization. China sees itself as Chung-Kou , the middle kingdom, the center of the universe and it's leadership see a world of independent nations unable to solve their problems. They also see the diminishment of the US's position in the world, and have concluded that it is time, in view of the long-held belief of being the middle kingdom, to step in and correct the world's problems. That the only way to do this is by creating one country—a single country that encompasses all the current independent nations of the world, ruled by China's authoritarian philosophy. where decisions are made and implemented without debate or opposition. A one-nation world called China, where the world's present problems and strife no longer exist.
