Applied Systems Engineering, Second Edition provides a practical, life cycle-based framework for designing, developing, and delivering complex technical systems. Encompassing aerospace, transportation, data infrastructure, and industrial applications it explains how stakeholder and business requirements are transformed into coherent, verifiable architectures that meet performance, cost, and scheduling objectives.
Drawing on the complete system life cycle, this timely edition details the integration of stakeholder requirements, functional and physical architectures, design, development, verification and validation, and management strategies across the conceptual, preliminary, detailed design and construction/production phases. It provides the foundations of modern systems engineering management, linking life-cycle planning, configuration control, and performance assessment with practical tools such as requirement traceability, system modeling, and risk-based decision making. Through disciplined, life cycle-based approaches, practitioners learn to anticipate integration challenges and apply processes that prevent costly overruns and performance shortfalls. Later chapters expand this foundation to include contemporary development methodologies like waterfall, incremental, evolutionary, spiral, and Agile, detailing their implications for engineering management, assurance, and logistics.
Combining philosophical insight with hands-on techniques, this essential reference provides project managers, systems engineers, quality and logistics professionals, and advanced students with a blueprint for reducing risk, controlling complexity, and achieving performance, cost, and schedule objectives across the entire system life cycle of large-scale engineering systems.
