Options Trading Accounts
Once you have acquired the right knowledge about options trading, the next step is identifying the right trading account. Once you get an account, you can start placing your orders and having a broker execute them for you.
Basically, two types of accounts can be used in options trading--a margin account and a cash account. When opening an account, the broker will always ask you the type of account you wish to have. A cash account allows you to use the cash in your account as premium while a margin account lets you use your stock and long-term options to borrow funds from brokers for use as premium. Below are steps you need to take when opening an options brokerage account:
Establish the type of account you need--this can either be a cash or margin account. The type of account you select will be determined by your investment objectives, terms of operating the account as well as the amount of capital you have. If you have enough cash for the trade, the broker will definitely open a cash account for you. However, if you have some underlying stocks but do not have enough cash, you may need to consider getting an account that has margin privileges. With such an account, you will be able to borrow money for purchasing your options and return this later. In this case, the stock you have will serve as the collateral.
