It is the day of the 2005 General Election. Zara Schlegel goes to the help of a man who has been assaulted on the streets of Newcastle; she doesn’t expect to be drawn into the life of a man who has not only lost his memory but whose whole identity is a complete mystery. Gradually she discovers that the man she has helped, who calls himself Andrew, is both a talented artist and an annoying enigma.Meanwhile, Andrew’s friends in London have no idea of his whereabouts and fear the worst. The police are initially unhelpful but Laura and Jonathan piece together a number of clues which lead them to a Tintoretto painting and a train journey north to Newcastle. As the two strands of the story merge, the psychological nature of the narrative deepens, at the same time as it becomes apparent that the police and security services really do want to know where Andrew is. Zara’s loyalty is tested and Laura and Jonathan again become powerless, as the action moves towards a climax in which more surprising facts about Andrew eventually emerge. The reader is kept guessing right until the end.
