Julia was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She has been an educator since 2003. Growing up she wanted to know more about the unique celebrations her parents celebrated growing up in Mexico and Guatemala.Julia believes that one step we can take towards world peace is getting to know other’s cultures and beliefs. Julia wants to pass this on to her young daughter, Jackie; that no matter where we are from, or what we believe, we all deserve and need love, respect, and acceptance. The Day of the Dead is a celebration of life. On this day, the living remember and honor those loved ones that have passed. Family and friends gather to tell stories and bring some of the favorite foods, drinks, and music that the deceased enjoyed while they were alive (ofrendas). The Day of the Dead is a celebration originating from the time of the Aztecs. After the colonization, the Spaniards changed the celebration, originally observed in September, to the month of November to coincide with the Christian holiday of All Saints Day. Since then, many other countries, specifically in Spanish speaking countries, celebrate The Day of the Dead on the eve of Oct.31- Nov. 2nd.
