Synopsis

Who really invented the light bulb? Why did a chariot in ancient China always point south? And how did a helicopter end up flying on Mars with a piece of the Wright brothers' plane on board?

Throughout the Centuries is an illustrated time-travel tour of inventions for curious kids ages 8 to 12, revised in 2026. It makes one stop in every century, from the 1st to the 21st, and meets the inventors, the problems they solved and the ideas that changed everyday life.

At every stop:
• A picture of the invention in use, drawn to match the real objects and clothes of its time
• A Fact File: who, when, where and what it did
• A Myth Buster: the famous story that isn't quite true, and what really happened
• Also in This Century: more inventions from around the world

Inside you'll meet: Hero of Alexandria's spinning steam ball, Cai Lun's paper, Aryabhata, the first rules for zero, Empress Shotoku's million printed prayers, the Banu Musa brothers' music machine, Bi Sheng's movable type, the first compass at sea, al-Jazari's elephant clock, the first eyeglasses, Gutenberg's press, Galileo's telescope, steam engines and hot air balloons, electric light with Joseph Swan, Thomas Edison and Lewis Latimer, computers from Ada Lovelace to Grace Hopper, and gene editing.

Also inside:
• Myths busted: Edison and the bulb, Franklin's kite, Watt's kettle, Hedy Lamarr and Wi-Fi, and more
• 9 safe Try It activities to do with an adult, from making paper to a parachute challenge
• Think Like an Inventor, and Talk About It questions for families and classrooms
• A timeline, a quiz, a glossary of history words and a pronunciation guide

Short chapters make it easy to read one stop at bedtime, or to dip in anywhere. Every fact was checked against museum, library and university sources, which are listed at the back.

Perfect for: curious kids who love how things work, young history fans, birthdays, holidays, homeschool and classroom libraries.
