Synopsis

Poland 1944, Mjetek finds himself in Auschwitz after taking part in Zionist underground activities trying to fight against the Nazi occupation of Warsaw. He meets his brother and understands that their entire family has been massacred and that their days are numbered. Mjetek decides to not give up and says he is a blacksmith, though he has never worked with metal. At work in one of the factories, a melted piece of iron falls and burns him. He manages to go back to the camp and his brother takes care of him, selling his golden tooth for medical supplies. Staying in the “clinic” was supposed to be the end of Mjetek but this is actually what saves him. When his brother is marched to his death and they have to say their final goodbye.
Mjetek’s story of survival is marked with small miracles, determination and unbelievable bravery. This memoir will leave you breathless and heartbroken, yet, inspired.

This book was written by my grandfather after many years of silence. He refused to say anything about his experiences during the Holocaust.
In the recording he left, he tells us, his grandchildren, that we must remember the horrors that our people went through and honor the bravery of the young people in the resistance.
While reading this book, one cannot help but notice the great luck that surrounded my grandfather, making it possible for him to survive the cruelties of the Holocaust. It also portrays his inspiring determination and will to survive, as well as his morality and deep humanism.
As a member of third generation Holocaust survivors, I see the dissemination of our people's history as being of utmost importance. It is crucial that the world knows our story and remembers how society made it possible for the Holocaust to happen.
Perhaps reading this book will encourage others to ensure that atrocities of this kind will never happen again.
