This may sound shocking if we forget that the Bible describes Jesus in John, 1: 19 as the “real light that enlightens every man.” We will see that he gave his closest disciples Mary Magdalene, Thomas, James, Judas, John, and a few others a teaching of enlightenment, and they wrote it down as he gave it to them. It was passed on among the early Christians for over a century as a guide to enlightenment. In the late second century, however, a powerful bishop of the early Church, Irenaeus of Gaul, a zealous follower of Paul, wrote a book—the first full-length book on Christianity—denouncing the very teaching Jesus had given his disciples. Irenaeus had not been initiated in the secret wisdom of Jesus and he almost certainly did not know it had come from Jesus. He fumed against it and branded it fraud and evil heresy. Another bishop and Church Father of the late second century, St. Clement of Alexandria, initially went along with Irenaeus and denied Jesus’ own teaching. Clement later wrote, however, that he had been initiated into Jesus’ Mystery of the Kingdom of God and had gained sublime experience of the transcendent from his practice. St. Mark took a secret gospel he had written to Alexandria where it was used for over a century to initiate people into the wisdom Jesus had given his disciples. Over the past two and a half centuries, manuscripts written by Jesus’ own disciples that had been hidden from book-burners nearly two thousand years ago were found in the deserts of Egypt, in the hands of antiquities dealers, and in museum collections. We will see extensive evidence that these are records of the very teaching Jesus gave his disciples of the “knowledge of the Mystery of the Kingdom of God,” which the Bible says he gave them apart from the crowds. In these ancient manuscripts, Jesus describes the unbound conscious intelligence that pervades the universe on the subtlest level and he taught his disciples a way to settle the mind and rest in the boundless silence of pure consciousness. He described this consciousness as one, simple, unchanging, unbounded, eternal, and supremely blissful. With repeated practice of transcending, the mind becomes established in this intelligence, and when a person is permanently established, he or she is said to be enlightened. Jesus' characterizations of pure consciousness are among the clearest and most extensive ever given. Unfortunately, when these ancient manuscripts were rediscovered over the last two centuries, Christian apologists interpreted them through Irenaeus' eyes as the works of Gnostic imposters. Throughout history, Jesus’ own teaching of enlightenment was hidden and denied while the teaching of Paul, which differ radically from Jesus' own teaching, was presented as the word of God. We will see mounds of evidence that these ancient manuscripts contain the authentic teaching Jesus gave his disciples to teach to others. Christians today, still deeply attached to medieval forms of Christianity, continue to raise doubts about the authenticity of the lost gospels. It is time to get beyond these false doubts so Christians can re-align with Jesus’ original teaching of enlightenment, which must again become the heart of Christianity. This book adopts a totally positive view of Christianity and calls for Christians to return to Jesus’ own teaching of enlightenment. To say Jesus is enlightened does not mean that he was only a man who became enlightened. The Bible and the Christian creeds make clear he is both God and man. As a man, he certainly lived in the highest state of human consciousness, in full enlightenment. Saying he is enlightened does not deny his Divinity; it only affirms it.
