From the Author:
Writing The Children's Author has been an exhilarating and enlightening challenge!
I wanted to offer as much help as I could to aspiring children's authors and present my information and examples in ways that were easy to follow and understand.
I hope I've achieved my aim!
Using examples from my own works was both fun and illuminating as one of my favourite challenges is to analyse a piece of writing; to dive deep into the layers of the story to discover what makes it work.
It's the task I enjoyed most in the English Papers, English exams and Writing Courses I've taken over the years, and the task I enjoy most when invited to judge a writing competition or present a writing workshop.
It's one of the first "tasks" I would recommend aspiring children's authors do; examine other children's books to discover what makes them work.
Search for the joy, the humour, the soul of the story. The simplest of successful picture books have an essence that lifts the story above the ordinary making it extraordinary.
These stories are everything we aspire to emulate.
