Synopsis

Makoto, a karate kid, is well-acquainted with Laziness and Procrastination. These character traits are embodied as a blue slug monster and a green and blue snail that can change sizes. They are his constant companions and the slothful life with them is fine with Makoto.

 

But then, Laziness and Procrastination cause Makoto miss his karate belt test. His good friend, Michi, earns her new belt while Makoto is stuck with embarrassment and confusion, waiting with his parents to have a talk with the head karate instructor.

 

Makoto realizes that Laziness and Procrastination are causing him problems in other areas of life like school and home. Not to mention he can’t seem to get his parents off his back with their constant nagging. He learns that Laziness and Procrastination are his enemies.

 

He decides to use his karate school’s Dojo Kun to fight Laziness and Procrastination with such character traits as doing his best, perseverance, respect and self-discipline. It won’t be easy, but perhaps Makoto can find his power through karate and become The Can-Do Karate Kid.

About the Author

Jenifer Tull-Gauger is a 6th degree black belt holding the title of Renshi. She is the highest ranking female instructor in the United Ryukyu Kempo Alliance, an international alliance of traditional Okinawan karate dojos. She has trained in karate for over 20 years and early in her training, she started assisting in the children's programs. Now, Jenifer is the head instructor of the Little Dragons early childhood karate program and the co-head instructor for the youth and adult programs at East Valley Martial Arts, the dojo she owns and runs with her husband. In her writing career, Jenifer's pictures and writings have appeared in several publications including Highlights Magazine for Children. She is a long-time active member of the international Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. Jenifer enjoys putting her karate and writing passions together in dojo newsletters and blogs, and now children's picture books. Jenifer loves her continuous training in karate because it's interesting and fun, and it helps her in all areas of life. Her favorite thing about being a karate mentor is watching students grow, improve and progress on their own paths.
