Synopsis
Problem strings consist of carefully crafted sequences of related math problems that help students develop robust mathematical reasoning. More tightly crafted than number talks to rely on more than just talk, they are designed to ensure fluency and progressive mathematical development. This unit aligns with the CCSS grade one objectives and is part of a new mathematics series on fluency that is a companion to k-5 Contexts for Learning Mathematics. This book provides problem strings to develop operations and algebraic thinking within 10, 20, and 100 using strategies such as equivalence, compensation, associativity, commutativity, and the five and ten structures. It also contains geometry strings to support the categorization of two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional solids, and measurement strings to support work with length, distance, and time.
