A Guide to Yom Kippur: Practices, Prayers, Ideas & Liturgy : Essential Reading for Yom Kippur
When we release all contingent, conditioned identities and imagine that this is our last day on earth, with nothing to hold onto, then who are we? We are unconditional purity, purpose and light. Our Divine soul is revealed.
Yom Kippur is called Shabbos Shabboson / 'the Resting of All Resting'. When we rest from giving our freedom of choice away in exchange for promises of position, wealth, beauty, status and power, we reveal what we really are: a part of the Divine, literally.
A LIGHTNESS OF BEING delves into the powerful and transformative day of Yom Kippur. Weaving together a multi-dimensional tapestry of practical, allegorical, philosophical and mystical ideas and implications, the teachings gathered herein empower us all to enter Yom Kippur and truly feel enlightened, elevated, lighter and transformed.

Yom Kippur is unabashedly transformative; the power of the day beckons us to work toward fundamental transformation and Teshuvah / return to who we really are.
Often, the word Teshuvah is unfortunately translated as 'repentance'. It is more accurately rendered as 'return', meaning both a return 'from' our states of spiritual alienation and exile, as well as a 'turning to' experiencing our deepest selves. Yom Kippur empowers us to return to our essence, reclaim who we truly are, and live from that place.
To truly move forward as a reclaimed self, we need to unload the baggage of the past that is weighing us down. To do this, it helps to make a compassionate but accurate self-evaluation and inventory, or 'spiritual accounting'. This is because we need to own our previous falsehoods and problems before we can let them go and separate from them.
In the context of Yom Kippur, 'owning our past' means looking back on the previous year and noticing when we were successful in our pursuits and perhaps in which areas we fell short of our potential. When were we not being ourselves? Think about this and ask: 'Where am I learning, growing, or ascending? 'Where am I stuck, stagnant or even descending?'
Think about how your past has brought you into the present. Where have you been and what have you done? What kind of person did you appear to be last year? Now envision the future. In the coming year, where do you want to go and what do you want to do, and why? Who do you want to be?
Yom Kippur plunges us into Teshuvah in such a way that it can generate Ta'anug, a spiritual pleasure that soars beyond all forms of physical and finite pleasure such as those of luxury, food, drink and intimacy. This is because Yom Kippur is a cosmic revelation of Lifnei Hashem / before or 'beyond' the Name of Hashem, as it were — meaning beyond all 'nameable' or definable experiences.
