Synopsis

Wonderfully offbeat, the stories of Mandy Ord's "one-eyed girl" reveal with poetic power the intimate, mundane, and extraordinary moments in everyday urban life

From spammers who take over your e-mail identity and dealing with a dead rat, to putting out flames in a train station garbage bin and how to warm your feet in winter, the experiences and reflections of Mandy Ord's one-eyed girl will put readers in touch with what really matters.

Reviews

In her autobiographical comics, Australian cartoonist Ord depicts herself as a black-clad neurotic with one huge eye. That seems fitting for an artist with a singular vision like hers, focused squarely on finding significance—or at least humor—in quotidian events. When she’s not at her drawing board, toiling at her job at a coffee shop, or hanging with her girlfriend, Ord might be negotiating dicey encounters in the subway, desperately searching for a parking space, or panicking after a spammer hijacks her e-mail account; but unlike the rest of us, she turns these everyday hassles into the stuff of art. The setting might be Melbourne, but the milieu is recognizable to urban dwellers everywhere. The ugly beauty of her comically grotesque drawings imparts a bit of a Lynda Barry vibe (especially when she’s portraying hilariously deranged canines), but Ord is defiantly her own gal: her thick-lined, ink-dense graphics, reminiscent of linoleum prints, have a confidence that belies her often-timid on-page persona. She’s definitely a creator to keep an eye (or two, if you’ve got them) on. --Gordon Flagg
