Martyn Thompson’s love for the world of interiors was ignited some 20 years ago working for famed editor and designer Ilse Crawford on Elle Decoration. Throughout his varied experiences Thompson has become a master of natural light, developing a cinematic approach to documenting interiors, and capturing the perfectly imperfect that make each environment a personal statement of its owner’s life and interests. Working Space is a photographic collection of a diverse range of studios and workplace—each an intriguing mosaic of the creative life.
The environments highlighted in Working Space are not your typical offices. It’s a book about people who are passionate for what they do. Looking inside the heart of this eclectic mix of personalities—that includes artist Cindy Sherman, barista Harry Levy, executive producer John Melfi, fashion designers Meadham Kirchhoff, and more, Thompson gives rare insight into work environments that are both inspirational and functional.
The spaces captured are honest and real—from a tiny office jam-packed with projects and objects to a luxuriously raw, lofty studio—each showing the marks of process and passion. This book accentuates the idea that the human and environment are always connected and Thompson’s anecdotes and intimate images are evidence that a work space can exist anywhere that inspires creativity and motivation.

Martyn Thompson is a groundbreaking photographer of still lifes and interiors. Born in London and raised in Sydney, Australia, Martyn studied fine art and literature at Sydney University. After finishing school, he visited New York City, and this trip made a lasting impression: the music and the clubs, but mostly the city and its people. After shooting fashion in Paris and London, he eventually began taking pictures of what really interested him: interiors. In 1994, Martyn became one of the founding photographers for Elle Decoration and, along with famed editor Ilse Crawford, created a new way of looking at interiors and objects. In 1999, he moved to New York, where he currently lives. Martyn’s portfolio includes editorial features in the most prominent magazines, such as Vanity Fair, British Vogue, W and House & Garden. Martyn’s work also features in high-profile advertising campaigns for Gucci, MAC Cosmetics, and Vera Wang.
