ANN LOVE and JANE DRAKE, sisters and coauthors, have written many award-winning books, including Yes You Can! Your Guide to Becoming an Activist; Cool Woods: A Trip around the World's Boreal Forest; Snow Amazing: Cool Facts and Warm Tales; Trash Action: A Fresh Look at Garbage; Sweet! The Delicious Story of Candy, winner of the Hackmatack Children's Choice Book Award; and Alien Invaders: Species That Threaten Our World. They share a lifelong interest in the environment and the wild, travel extensively, and, through their books and presentations, inspire children to be more observant of the world around them. Ann Love and Jane Drake live in the Toronto area.
Focusing mainly on dogs and cats but with some attention to fish, reptiles, rodents, and birds, Love and Drake celebrate the affection that connects people with their pets. Along with providing a historical overview of animal domestication over a running time line of milestones, the authors profile some famous real pets, including the extraordinary whiskey-drinking, sailor-mouthed parrot, Polly. They run through major cat and dog breeds; discuss characteristic instincts, personalities, behavior, and body language; and explain how to plan for, choose (from either a store or a shelter, they make no judgments), and care for an animal. The cat chapter closes with a brief tale about a pet who experiences a year as a stray, and similarly, the one on dogs concludes with the bonding of a trained seizure-dog and a child with epilepsy. Slavin skillfully captures the bountiful warmth here, depicting a wide variety of pets and their young folk in watercolor portraits on nearly every page. Though not systematic enough to work as an owner's manual, this will draw animal lovers like a magnet. Grades 4-6. --John Peters

Paperback. Condition: new. Slavin, Bill (illustrator). Paperback. Pets and their owners appear together in a book as heartwarming as it is informative. From our earliest beginnings, we have shared our lives with animals. Jane Drake and Ann Love explore the ties that humans and their pets have formed. With fun and fascinating facts, they address Dog People and Cat People. (Why does a cat wind around her owner's legs? She's rubbing her owner with glands on her face to say "you're mine.") They also introduce us to more unusual pets. There's Polly the parrot, who lived through the Klondike Gold Rush to be 126 years old by belting back whiskey, swearing, and biting gold miners. And, of course, there are fish and reptiles, rodents and horses, all of whom can be beloved pets. As useful as it is fun, Talking Tails is a must for children who have or want a pet. From the Hardcover edition.
