Synopsis

Motivated solely by the desire for material gain Diana lives her life careless and oblivious of the feelings of others. Her harsh and loveless childhood spent with her twisted and tyrannical mother has shaped and moulded her into a cold, callous, soulless, amoral monster. Indomitable of spirit in business and daily life she gives no quarter and expects none. She sheds no tears and shows no weakness. However deep inside her lurk feelings she cannot understand; feelings which occasionally but fleetingly show themselves, she however sees tender emotions as an aberration and a flaw in her character, a weakness to be suppressed at all cost, and eventually it seems she has killed all such emotions, until one day someone comes into her life and awakens the aberration. It is true love which has brought Diana to her knees, therefore she cast her lover away from her because she see's such emotion as weakness, and then begins an inner struggle which eventually brings her to the point of madness, and she watches her life falling apart and her acquired riches rapidly diminishing, while she it seems is powerless to stop it.

REVIEWS Getter is structured like and reads like an autobiography, and because of its power and intensity I am tempted to believe that much of it, if not all of it, is based upon the author's actual personal experience. I make no judgements of course, on the contrary, because if this book is (as stated) after all entirely fictional, then the author deserves high praise indeed for her exceptional writing ability and amazing imagination. The characters and the storyline kept me turning the pages until the very end. The author has done an excellent job in bringing the characters to life with her writing and she can certainly write with style. This is an inspired book but in a different way from the usual, and it teaches us that people really can change. I felt so sorry for Diana and her Mother in the end, although at first I thought her mother a selfish bitch. The Mother's illness rubbed off on Diana, eventually putting Diana in a mad house, but with help she sorted herself out, and she became more human. It was heart warming to see her finally get back with the only love of her life, but it was a pity that so many good years were wasted. I loved everyone in the story, especially old Mel, bless him...It is a great book. I thought this book might not be to my taste, and especially since I knew she had written the entire book in only six weeks, I therefore assumed it must be seriously lacking. I told Christine just that and warned her I would be mercilessly honest and blunt as always, but I gave it a proper read anyway. Being a person of few words I am grateful the book (meal) was not a big one as I had to eat my words, because Getter is really good.
