About the Author:
Guy Warner is a retired schoolteacher and former MOD civil servant, who grew up in Newtownabbey in Northern Ireland, attending Abbots Cross Primary School and Belfast High School before going to Leicester University and later Stranmillis College. He now lives in Greenisland, Co Antrim with his wife Lynda. He also has two grown up daughters and three grandchildren. He is the author of over twenty five books and booklets on aviation past and present and has written hundreds of articles for magazines in the UK, Ireland and the USA. He also reviews books for several publications, gives talks to local history societies etc and has appeared on TV and radio programmes, discussing aspects of aviation history.
Review:
"Lighter-than-air non-rigid craft (or “blimps”) were responsible for a good part of anti-submarine actions in World War I. Guarding western approaches, SS-Class (Submarine Scout or Sea Scout) airships operating from Royal Naval Air Service stations patrolled the Irish coast searching for U-boats and escorting Allied naval vessels safely into harbor. Airships Over Ulster gives details of these patrols from the first military aviation facility in Ulster, on the eastern coast of northern Ireland. The text includes personal stories of crews involved, photos and technical particulars of the airships, as well as tips on how to fly one (which raises the question: why is no one in the army of replica builders out there working on an SS-Class Airship?). The new edition of this monograph is an important contribution to collecting regional histories. It is recommended." (Over the Front)
