9781780970011: Great Modern Structures: 100 Years of Engineering Genius

People still speak of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, but today's architectural and engineering marvels put them to shame. This new edition of Great Modern Structures profiles over 60 spectacular structures built over the last 100 years. From Dubai's Burg Khalifa--the world's tallest tower--to the Millau Viaduct Bridge in France, supported by concrete columns taller than the Eiffel Tower, this technically detailed, beautifully illustrated guide celebrates human ingenuity and daring.

About the Author:

David Littlefield regularly contributes to such periodicals as Building Design, Blueprint Design Week, and the RIBA Journal. He is the author of Modern Architecture: London. Will Jones regularly contributes to newspapers, magazines, and books, including Dwell and Architecture, RA Magazine, Financial Times, and Cathedral: an Illustrated Guide.

From Booklist:

Depicting about 70 edifices built in the past century, this pictorial volume arrests the attention of those interested in civil engineering. Placed beside impressive photographs, its explanations of projects note distinctive construction challenges and the solutions engineers brought to bear on them. Accordingly, Littlefield and Jones are not committed to showing off only iconic structures, though they include many, such as the Hoover Dam and the Sydney Opera House. Rather, they emphasize ones whose construction methods or site or purpose make them stand out. They present landmarks in the development of steel frames for skyscrapers, prestressed concrete for almost anything, or ETFE (“one of the most exciting building products to emerge in recent years”) for exteriors. Examples of power plants, natural-gas platforms, radio telescopes, and park pavilions show engineering meeting a need, as does an observation tower in Glasgow, Scotland, that swings like a weather vane. If engineers can be whimsical, their fancies flow from physical constraints that Littlefield and Jones and their complement of pictures accentuate in this handsome tome. --Gilbert Taylor
