William Henry has trawled the archives to produce this meticulous account of the many raids, ambushes, murders, and reprisals that took place in the 1919-21 period, and of those who were involved. He details the activities of the dreaded Black and Tans, and looks at how everyday life was affected by the ongoing war and how the attitude of the people changed as the brutality of the Tans intensified. He details hunger strikes in Galway jail and the general strike in the city that resulted as well as the boycotts of the British forces throughout the county. With fascinating and sometimes horrific details he brings the time to life.
