Pearse's skills as an orator are indisputable. His fiery idealism was one of the key motivators that brought the rebels to the GPO in 1916. This collection of his writing showcases this skill, but also the complex philosophy that underpinned it. ""These tales...demonstrate complexities of Pearse's life and aspirations in ways that the biographical narrative cannot.""-The Endless Bookshelf.

Patrick Henry Pearse was an Irish teacher, barrister, poet, writer, nationalist and political activist who was one of the leaders of the Easter Rising in 1916. He was declared President of the Provisional Government of the Irish Republic in one of the bulletins issued by the Rising's leaders, a status that was however disputed by others associated with the rebellion both then and subsequently. Following the collapse of the Rising and his subsequent execution, Pearse came to be seen by many as the embodiment of the rebellion.
"to begin to understand Pearse this collection is essential reading." -- J. Anthony Gaughan "a crucial collection for the library of anyone with an interest in Irish history." -- Des Breen "the extent of his vision is evident [...] Those interested in Irish history can't fail to be stimulated by this.' -- Fachtna Kelly
