Equally important, it is hoped that groups representing the needs of the general population, those with disability, mental illness, older people with specific needs and others also will benefit from the text. The whole project is to improve the overall health and wellbeing of all who live in Ireland. It is hoped also that this publication will be a spur to the further development of research and teaching in the area of integrated care, as well as being a catalyst for the resourcing and implementation of improved public policy in the area. As such, this book will be important to students and lecturers across the disciplines of medicine, social work, social care, gerontology, addiction, health management, lawyers in health and human rights areas, mental health therapists and other sister professions that are not included here, such as occupational and speech/ language/auditory therapies.

Tom is an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Integrated Care and on the Editorial Board of the Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies. He is also a member of the International Federation of Integrated Care and the TASC Economists' Network.
... in some areas of care, interdisciplinary working in Ireland has developed considerably: examples include major improvements that have occurred in cancer care over the last decade, or the development of substance abuse programmes. However, it is not always obvious, even within health and social care services, as to which are the areas where we are integrating well, and which are the areas where we clearly are not.
Integrated Care for Ireland in an International Context therefore is particularly timely, and fills a gap in our knowledge of both what seems to work and also of areas where there is a patent failure to integrate services appropriately. Drawing on experience from a range of areas is a particular strength of the book, which includes overviews of mental health, services for older people and primary care, as well international perspectives.
But perhaps the most important reason for producing this text is to remind us of the importance of moral and professional agency for those of us working in health and social care, and to provide an intellectual underpinning for advocacy that, at times, may be uncomfortable in its implication for our professional lives.
Integrated Care for Ireland in an International Context provides a welcome step forward for both action and debate.
--From the Foreword by Professor Desmond O'Neill
