Since its genesis on the East Coast of the United States in the late 1960s, street art has travelled to nearly every corner of the globe, morphing into highly ornate and vibrant new styles.

From Steve Powers (Espo) in New York to Kid Zoom in Australia, taking in Banksy’ s London, Paris as transfigured by Honet and OX, and the gargantuan murals of the Brazilian twins ‘ Os Gê meos’ ,  The World Atlas of Street Art and Graffiti  is the first truly geographical history of the form.

Featuring specially commissioned works from major graffiti and street art practitioners, The World Atlas of Street Art and Graffiti  offers the reader an insider’ s view of the urban landscape as the artists themselves experience it.

This beautifully illustrated book, produced with the help of many of the artists it features, dispels the idea of such art as a thoughtless defacement of pristine surfaces, and instead celebrates it as a contemporary and highly creative inscription upon the skin of the built environment.

Organized geographically, by continent and by city – from New York, Los Angeles and Montreal in North America, through Mexico City and Buenos Aires in Latin America, to London, Berlin and Madrid in Europe, as well as Sydney and Tokyo in the Pacific – it profiles more than 100 of today’ s most important artists and features over 700 astonishing artworks.

Let s hope that Schacter s book finds its way to the folks who oversee the installation of public art in the city. Some in Boston would like to see the Dewey Square commissions go to local artists, but why not open them to the world? Why not consider the celestial allegorical murals by Interesni Kazki, a duo from Kiev, Ukraine, or the gritty larger-than-life portraits by Portuguese artist Alexandre Farto? This book holds a world of possibilities. Jan Gardner, Boston Globe
--Jan Gardner "Boston Globe ""

The most eye-opening aspect of this massive, and possibly even definitive, volume is the introduction it offers to graffiti artists in other countries. Among these masterworks are the Philip Guston-like intricacies of EKTA s creations in Sweden, ARZ s work in Barcelona, the dreamscapes of AEC and WAONE in Kiev, the Roy Lichtenstein-inspired work of CEPT in London, the nearly countless artists in Mexico City and Melbourne, and the astonishing fantasy animals of BMD in New Zealand. But this is just scratching the surface of the visual delights inside this volume. Alan Bisbort, Below the Fold--Alan Bisbort"Below the Fold" (08/30/2013)"

A truly international and entertaining city by city guide to the most spectacular and most sly works of contemporary art in public places, sometimes authorized, sometimesnot. Kenneth Baker, San Francisco Chronicle--Kenneth Baker "San Francisco Chronicle ""

About the Author:
Dr Rafael Schacter is an anthropologist and curator from London. He co-curated the ‘Street Art’ exhibition at Tate Modern, London, in 2008. He has written for a variety of publications and has lectured on Independent Public Art around the world. His ethnography, Ornament and Order, is based on an ongoing engagement as well as more than two years’ in-depth fieldwork with some of the world’s most important Independent Public Artists.

John Fekner is a multidisciplinary artist from New York City. A pioneer in urban art, much of his work remains site-specific in the streets and includes the hand-cut, painted stencil, I Still Have a Dream, which was installed on the outside wall of Pal’s Lounge, Atlanta, Georgia, in honour of Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday in 2012.
