Academic and industrial interest in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has grown over the past decade. This book discusses SERS enhancement from plasmonic and possibly non-plasmonic enhancing surfaces; applications in biological studies, including immunoassays and ultrasensitive biomolecular detection; single molecule detection; tip-enhanced Raman scattering (TERS); and analytical applications. This Faraday Discussion introduces emerging areas and explores the diverse range of approaches and disciplines contributing to the growth and understanding of this optical phenomenon.

Faraday Discussions documents a long-established series of Faraday Discussion meetings which provide a unique international forum for the exchange of views and newly acquired results in developing areas of physical chemistry, biophysical chemistry and chemical physics. The papers presented are published in the Faraday Discussion volume together with a record of the discussion contributions made at the meeting. Faraday Discussions therefore provide an important record of current international knowledge and views in the field concerned. The latest impact factor of Faraday Discussions is 3.588.
This volume aims to set the agenda for the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) field for the next 10 years, by welcoming in new emerging priority areas and embracing the diversity of approaches and disciplines which are contributing to the growth and understanding of this optical phenomenon, especially in light of new theoretical and experimental data. This follows the highly successful Faraday Discussions volume on SERS published in 2006, which mainly focused on the origin of the enhancement and the mechanisms behind this using the information available at that time.
Academic and industrial interest in SERS has grown over the past decade. This is evidenced by the number of papers published involving the term ‘surface enhanced Raman’ increasing from 580 in 2005 to almost 2000 in 2014. There are also now companies dedicated to providing SERS surfaces and SERS based products. The miniaturisation of Raman instrumentation has also opened up the deployment of SERS as a technique into a much wider sphere of disciplines than traditional chemistry and physics.
This volume covers four main themes:
• Theory of SERS enhancement
• SERS in biology/biomedical SERS
• Ultrasensitive and towards single molecule SERS
• Analytical SERS
