About the Author:

About the authors
CHARLES PERRAULT (pronounced Per-roh) was born in Paris in 1628 and worked for the King of France, Louis XIV, but when he retired from the court he took uo writing. He collected folk tales and fairy stories which had been passed by word of mouth down through generations - and some from earlier books - and retold them in a modern way. Perrault's book, published in 1697, was called 'Tales of Times Past' but it was more commonly known as 'Tales of Mother Goose'. It was an instant success, and became the model of all future retellings, such as those by the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen. His stories remain some of the most widely read fairy tales in the world.
JACON and WILHELM GRIMM were born in Hanau, Germany, in 1785 and 1786, the eldest of six children. They both studied law, and became interested in the popular stories handed down through history - the folk talrs and feiry stories told in gerations of families. They collected as many stories as they could from friendsand neighbors and wrote them down, to make sure they were not lost or forgotten. Their collection, 'Nursery and Household Tales', contained over 200 stories and was published in two volumes - the first in 1812 and the second in 1814. The books made the brothers famous around the world.
HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN
(1805-1875) grew up in a poor area of Odense in Denmark. His father was a shoemaker and his mother was a washer woman. They could not afford to give their son a good education, but they both loved stories and it was from them that Hans Christian came to love folklore and storybooks. When Hans Christian was 11, his father died, so he went out to work. Three years later he went to Copenhagen and began a career as a singer. It was through his interest in the Royal Theater that Hans Chritisn turned back to his talent for writing stories and poetry. In 1822 he returned to school to finish his education, and later studied at Copenhagen University. His most popular stories include 'The Ugly Duckling', 'The Princess and the Pea', 'The Little Mermaid', 'The Emperor's New Clothes' and 'The Snow Queen'. He became known as the father of the modern fairy tale.

VAL BIRO
(1921-2014) was born in Budapest, Hungary as Balint Stephen Biro, and moved to England in 1939 so he could study at the Central School of Arts in London. Through a long career spanning over 70 years, his illustrations appeared in over 400 books worldwide, and on the covers of many more. He was a renowned and much-loved author and illustrator of children's books, including his most famous series, 'Gumdrop', which featured the fictional adventures of Val's own vintage car.
