We live in a world where despite the colossal amount spent globally on healthcare programs, massive inequalities in health—both within and between countries—still exist. In this path-breaking new collection, Geeta Sodhi and Abraar Karan have gathered essays that draw on in-depth empirical research spanning across Asia, Latin America, and Africa, bringing together first-hand experience from a range of international health experts.

Protecting the Health of the Poor provides an outstanding overview of the legal, political, and social factors obstructing the inherent human right for health in poor-performance countries of the global south. This remarkable book offers fresh perspectives from critically engaged scholars who offer a compelling case for re-evaluating how we approach healthcare in developing countries at a global, national, and local level. Together, the contributors make a fierce, logical argument for the necessity of organizations and governments worldwide collaborating on a comprehensive agenda to fight against poverty and to protect the health of the poor.

About the Author:

Abraar Karan is a MD candidate at UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine and has been an external consultant at the CDC in Mozambique, and has also worked abroad in India, Latin America, and Africa. Geeta Sodhi is a member of Project Advisory Group at Global Health Strategies and director at the Swaasthya Trust.

Review:

“These are just a few of the cases to draw out the links among poverty, development and health. Protecting the Health of the Poor argues that these three aspects are inextricably linked – and that addressing inequalities in this relationship is a matter of moral urgency.”

Book Description ZED BOOKS LTD, United Kingdom, 2015. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. Nowhere is the injustice of the global distribution of income and wealth more palpable than in health. While the world's affluent spend fortunes on the most trifling treatments, poor people's lives are ruined and often cut short prematurely by challenges that could easily be overcome at low cost: childbirth, diarrhoea, malnutrition, malaria, HIV/AIDS, measles, pneumonia. Millions are avoidably dying from such causes each year and billions of lives avoidably blighted by these diseases of poverty. Drawing on in-depth empirical research spanning Asia, Latin America, and Africa, this path-breaking collection offers fresh perspectives from critically engaged scholars. Protecting the Health of the Poor presents a call and a vision for unified efforts across geographies, levels and sectors to make the right to health truly universal.
