Im Roman ist es Mendel Singer, der in Ostgalizien ein bescheidenes Dasein als Lehrer fristet, bis ihn die Schicksalsschläge Der älteste Sohn muss und will zum russischen Militär, der zweite desertiert nach Amerika, die einzige Tochter lässt sich mit Kosaken ein und der jüngste Sohn scheint unheilbar behindert. Und dieser Jüngste muss zurückgelassen werden, als die Eltern mit der Tochter nach Amerika fliehen, wo der emigrierte Sohn Sam ihnen ein behagliches Leben bereiten will. Doch wieder schlägt der strafende Jehova zu. Beide Söhne fallen im I. Weltkrieg, die Mutter stirbt darüber und die Tochter endet im Wahnsinn. Als auch Mendel Singer zu verzweifeln droht und sich von Gott abwendet, geschieht das Wunder der Aus dem behinderten Sohn ist ein begnadeter Komponist und Dirigent geworden, der nun seinen Vater zu sich nimmt.
