About the Author

Prof Colm Durkan is the founder and Head of the Nano-Engineering Science research group at the Nanoscience Centre of the University of Cambridge, and is Deputy head of the Department of Engineering. He is also a fellow of St Catharine's College, Cambridge.  He has developed and taught courses on nanotechnology, quantum mechanics and electronics. He was elected to a fellowship of the Institute of Physics in 2009 and the Institute of Engineering & Technology in 2014 for his work in nanotechnology. Colm's research interests lie in understanding how and why the properties of materials change dramatically when those materials are of nanometer dimensions and how to make practical use of that, and in the properties of surfaces. He has led industrial collaborations with multiple major industrial partners, and loves nothing more than exploring new phenomena in the lab. Colm lives in Cambridge with his family and two crazy dogs.
