In 1974, to rave reviews, Porsche produced the 930/911 Turbo to the public and set off on a new road. At the same time, the governing body of motorsport introduced a new "silhouette" formula to sports car racing. Thus the immortal 934 and 935 were born. Porsche 930 to 935: The Turbo Porsches tells the story of the 911 Turbo and its racing cousins, from the 1974 2.1-liter RSR Turbo Carrera to the tube-framed 750 horsepower final variants of the 935. These are the cars which still bring a gleam of pleasure to any of the drivers lucky enough to have sampled their enormous power and, sometimes, their wayward handling!

About the Author:

John Starkey began life in Birmingham, England.  After school, with dreams of “rock stardom” in mind, he played guitar in several bands, along the way opening for the Beatles in 1963, before becoming Jasper Carrott’s manager. His father’s love of fast cars had passed down to him and, starting with a Jaguar XK120, bought in 1966 for £120, he started discovering this heady world. After a 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta, life was never quite the same again, and the racing bug bit hard when he first drove a Porsche RSR. This was followed by “a beast” of a 935, then a Lola T70 Mk 3b coupé, and a March 84G. These he raced across Europe and America. In 1997, John moved to America, where he began writing, naturally, about racing cars.  After twenty books, John thinks he has now run out of subjects to cover, although he has recently begun a novel about the world of dealing in old cars. He also investigates the individual histories of old racing cars for clients, and together with Su, his wife, enjoys walking his dog Boomer.

Review:
Starkey recounts a fascinating story: his descriptive passages are interspersed with interviews of drivers and owners and much of the historical value of this book lies in the recollections of people such as Nick Faure and John Fitzpatrick and Americans Dick Barbour, Alwin Springer or Al Halberts. Porsche 390 to 935 is a compelling read and a fine record of a period in motorsport which makes today's ultra technical and impossibly expensive hybrid racing and formula E look distinctly pallid: the author hopes his work may help to bring more of these simple, but scintillating Porsches into the historical racing scene and no reader of this inspiring work could possibly disagree. - Kieron Fennelly. Through. That'd be Porsche 930 to 935, the turbo Porsches in a word. Not only does it turn back the history books right the way to the first turbochargers (1905 to be precise), the forced induction ships and World War II planes, but it recounts every single outing of every chassis. That includes the numerous privately prepared and developed cars, and doubles the book's length ... This is a detailed document that celebrates a few Porsche icons. - Motor Sport. This book tells the story of the 911 Turbo and its racing cousins, from the 1974 2.1 litre RSR Turbo Carrera to the tube-framed 750hp final variants of the 935. In includes the full development history for each model, details of individual chassis histories, background history of the international racing scene in the 1970s and 1980s, and details on alternative models such as the Baby 935, and the Kremer Brothers' K3. The hardback book is 304 pages and it includes some 252 pictures. - GT Porsche.
