Synopsis

The Spirits’ Book is part of the Spiritist Codification, and is regarded as one of the five fundamental works of Spiritism. Originally published by the French educator Allan Kardec, it was the first —and still remains— the most important spiritist book, because it addresses questions developed by the author.

The Spirits’ Book is structured as a collection of questions regarding God, the order of the universe, the origin of the spirits, reincarnation, life after death, the afterlife, the purpose of the life, angels, evil and good, dreams, telepathy, prayer, illegality, war, justice, freedom, suicide, egoism, love, etc.

The answers, according to Kardec, were given to him by a group of spirits who identified themselves as "The Spirit of Truth", with whom he communicated in several Spiritist sessions. Kardec, who considered himself an “organizer” rather than an author, grouped the questions and their answers by theme, occasionally including lengthier digressions the spirits had dictated to him on specific subjects, some signed by philosophers such as Augustine of Hippo and Thomas Aquinas and writers including Voltaire.

The Spirits’ Book is an essential work to read, study and meditate for the true spiritual seeker.

About the Author

Allan Kardec is considered the father of Spiritism —as compared to Spiritualism— in France. His real name was Hypolyte Leon Denizard Rivail. The pseudonym originated from mediumistic communications. Both the names "Allan" and "Kardec" were said to have been his names in previous incarnations. Not very much is known about Allan Kardec's early years within the Spiritualist Movement, but his impact upon the Movement is profound.

He is best known for his classic, Le Livre des Esprits (The Spirits' Book). Within this book is expounded a new theory of human life and destiny. The Spirits' Book is based on trance communications received through Mlle. Celina Bequet, a professional somnambulist (hypnotist) who, for family reasons, took the name of Celina Japhet and, controlled by her grandfather, M. Hahnemann, and Franz Anton Mesmer, gave medical advice.

The success of The Spirits' Book cannot be questioned. It is, by far, one of the mostly popular books dealing with mediumship, life in Spirit, and the evolution of the soul. It has attained more than 25 editions and still remains widely read, especially amongst the people of South America, Australia, and New Zealand. It is, without question or equal, the primary text amongst Spiritists.
