Ramakrishna fue un asceta hindú de Bengala. Aunque teóricamente nació siendo un brahamin en el seno de una casta elevada, era de un pueblo pobre, perteneciente a una casta inferior, y no recibió educación ninguna. No sabía hablar sánscrito y aprendió todo lo que sabía sobre los Vedas, los puranas y la épica hindú de forma oral (en bengalí). Aun así, mediante sus aforismos, consiguió transmitir la esencia de la religión hindú. Ramakrishna veneró con musulmanes y cristianos y propuso un enfoque muy sencillo sobre la tolerancia religiosa: « los credos y las sectas no tienen ninguna relevancia. Permitid que cada uno practique con fe los ritos de su propio credo. La fe es la única pista para llegar a Dios ».
