In the summer of 1941 Jack Bosomworth, aged 19, volunteered for the RAF and came to be selected for training as Wireless Operator / Air Gunner. After his period of training he joined 57 Squadron, part of 5 Group, Bomber Command, and was stationed at East Kirkby in Lincolnshire. Jack passed away in 2013 aged 91.This very personal account, which makes use of his Log Book, provides a unique insight into the service career of an ordinary person caught up in the extraordinary events and turmoil of the Second World War. Jack Bosomworth flew twenty-eight operations, including eight sorties to Berlin and the Ruhr, which were amongst the most heavily defended targets in Germany. He also survived the two most costly raids of the entire war for Bomber Command - Leipzig with seventy five aircraft lost, and Nuremberg with ninety-five aircraft lost. Truly, he was one of the lucky ones.
