Marie J. Kuda (1939–2016) was one tough butch lesbian. As an out gay woman in Chicago during the 1950s and 1960s, she confronted homophobia wherever it struck. She wrote for the Mattachine Midwest Newsletter, Chicago’s first long-lasting homophile publication. Kuda was in contact with some of the top lesbian literary icons of the 20th Century, and she hosted Lesbian Writers’ Conferences, 1974–1978. She also wrote for dozens of feminist, lesbian and gay publications in Chicago and across the country. The breadth of her contributions to the national lesbian movement, especially the literary world, can’t be overestimated, and yet her work was mostly behind the scenes, supporting and documenting the efforts of previous and current generations. In the days prior to gender studies, Kuda was among the few itinerant amateur historians who traveled the country with her slideshows, giving our people the kernels of history that would validate, inspire and feed our souls. This is a collection of more than 100 of Kuda’s essays and articles.
