Elizabeth Gaskell took inspiration from letters sent by Charlotte to Ellen Nussey to write this biography of her friend. The first edition was published in 1857 to popular acclaim, and remains the most significant study of the famous author. Charlotte was the eldest of the three Brontė sisters and whose novels became classics of English literature such as Jane Eyre and Villette. This captivating biography takes the reader from Charlotte’s early childhood with her sisters, explores her writings, her marriage and her tragic death.

About the Author
Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell (nee Stevenson; 29 September 1810 - 12 November 1865), often referred to simply as Mrs. Gaskell, was an English novelist and short story writer during the Victorian era. She is perhaps best known for her biography of Charlotte Brontė. Her novels offer a detailed portrait of the lives of many strata of society, including the very poor, and as such are of interest to social historians as well as lovers of literature.
