When a fish migrates to a new body of water, it is pow-erless. It has no idea where it will find its food, where its pred-ators reside, which aspects of that new habitat are harmful to the fish, and which aspects are beneficial. With time, experi-ence, and, most importantly, knowledge, the fish will be able to thrive in its new home successfully.
Leaving my country for the first time was like swim-ming into new territory. Though I was knowledgeable on
how to thrive in a new environment like this, I was not the most knowledgeable in terms of the minuscule yet impact-ful aspects of living in the United States and having financial liberty. Knowledge is power; however, for a fish in a new sea, the lack of knowledge rendered me powerless. I first realized this when I was 42 years old, and I aspired to buy the house of my “American Dream.” It had four bedrooms and an open backyard and approximated to the finest city in America, New York.
