Synopsis

The ‘ Teaching English’ series offers a mixture of methodology and practical ideas for teachers of English as a foreign language. A Comprehensive Language Coaching Handbook fits into the series well as its overall objectives are to clarify fundamentals of language coaching (LC) with definitions and descriptions of processes to a wider audience of language and communication professionals, education and learning specialists. It defines and identifies differences from language teaching and training. It describes areas in language acquisition and language usage, communication it can support and how it can be applied and implemented, with theory, case studies and novel tools immediately applicable in classes. Based on coaching and applied linguistics etc. literature, personal research conducted in the author’ s lessons and sessions, feedback from clients and teachers trained and who also apply LC as the author understands it. A Comprehensive Language Coaching Handbook is distinctive in that it is a comprehensive guide to how LC emerged from coaching and various traits of corporate training and BE training, covering a wide scope of fields and disciplines influencing LC. This book is unique in the fact it clarifies the often-blurred distinctions between the 3 key areas of teaching, training, coaching and provides many practical takeaways for the reader. Coaching in ELT is often addressed as in how to coach teachers. Throughout the book the author looks at how coaching skills (the mindset and methodologies) and tools can be applied in the classroom directly with learners, both individually and in groupwork, as part of a pure LC process form or as part of using a coaching approach to blend into the teaching framework. At the end of each chapter there is a chance to reflect on your language coaching and use experiential learning to build the best practice appropriate to you and your teaching context. This book is for practising language teachers and trainers who are looking to enrich dimensions from multi-faceted perspectives to their existing teaching repertoire. It can also be used by teacher trainers leading training courses/sessions or school managers looking to upskill their staff.
