Synopsis
In this revision of his thesis (in 1994, from the Royal Academy of Music in London, UK, where he remains as a tutor and lecturer), Allis analyzes the stages that characterize the writing of the 19th-century English composer Parry (d.1918) as a way of understanding his creative process. Initial chapters describe the reception of Parry's music and the primary sources on which the study is based. The remainder of the text describes at length the sketching, drafting, and scoring process Parry used to compose; his methods for choosing and setting the text to music; and details of rehearsal, performance, and publication of his music.
