Synopsis
Using concepts from public choice literature, Martin-Das (research analyst, Institute for Women's Leadership at Rutgers, the State U. of New Jersey) examines the interaction between the European Council, Council of Ministers, European Commission, European Parliament, and European Central Bank in order to model the political marketplace of European Monetary Union. She argues that differences in national preferences following economic shocks can lead to divergent policy demands within European institutions, leading to political disaffection and subsequent withdrawal from the single currency system.
