This easy-to-read book demystifies the Internet and all it has to offer. Through the use of simple language and clear screen-shot annotations, the reader is guided through the major features of the Internet and, in effect, taken on a mini Internet-tour.
Assuming no prior knowledge, this book begins by explaining what the Internet is, how to get started, and how to perform basic Web and E-mail searches. This gentle introduction provides the perfect base on which to build and increase the reader's Internet knowledge.
From this point each chapter is dedicated to a particular subject area, such as Internet Banking or children's Web sites. The author describes how this subject is covered on the Internet, facilities available relating to the subject area, and details web-sites of particular interest in each category. For example, Chapter 2, Finance on the Web, lists the First Direct bank's web site, the Visa web site and the Mastercard web site amongst others. Furthermore, the author discusses the advantages and disadvantages of using these web sites as opposed to traditional banking methods. This approach is adopted throughout the book allowing the reader to make informed choices whilst using the Internet and thus maximise their personal benefit.
Internet Shopping is discussed where shops such as Tesco and Ikea are examined as to their on-line facilities. A chapter is dedicated to 'Food and Drink' on-line, and another to 'Healthy Living'. Further areas covered include: Education; News and Information; Organisations; Technology; Travel and Tourism; and Leisure.
Covering a wide range of subjects, and avoiding the use of 'computer jargon', this book is ideal for all. Whether an Internet novice, or a current user curious as to all the World Wide Web has to offer, this book is bound to teach the reader plenty they didn't already know!

There's no denying that for a beginner the Internet is a huge and very daunting place.
Without a few basic pieces of knowledge (the most important being where to locate the top search engines) you will find yourself severely limited in what Web sites you can actually find.
Of course, blindly guessing at URLs often works but with so many organisations with similar names it doesn't always guarantee you'll find what you are looking for.
Internet Directory in Easy Steps is a good starting point for an Internet beginner. It's a selection of some of the most popular Web sites around, grouped into specific categories.
The author has tried to pick subjects that appeal to the widest range of people so topics such as Internet shopping, food and drink, education, leisure and current affairs are all covered.
For the kids, there's a good selection of some of the more fun sites while the ardent hypochondriac should be happy with information about cancer, hayfever and osteoporosis. For the most inexperienced surfers this as good a book as any to start with, but as everyone who uses the Internet is looking for very different things, more proficient users might not gleam the same benefits. --Steve Russell

Aimed at internet users who find the world wide web a little difficult to fathom, this provides a whole host of places to go, and covers a wide range of useful topics - so whatever your area of interest there should be something there for you. All the web sites listed have been checked for non-offensive content, a help for parents wanting to get their children used to the internet, and the books provides links for continued exploration, so your surfing will never come to a dead end. The title covers most of the major websites you might want to visit and, as with the rest of the web, a few that you wouldn't. On the whole, a useful resource for those making their first tentative steps of web exploration. -- Computeractive, 22nd April 1999
