These stories are a wonderful way for children to explore one of nature's most fascinating mysteries—the instinctive compulsion for animals to migrate over large distances. With poetic text and stunning illustrations, these tales evoke the majestic environments that each animal inhabits.
Two tiny swallows, Skimmer and Sweet Claw, have flown over a long distance to raise their young brood in the exact same nest they built last year. Now it is time for them to leave the cold, autumnal winds of northern Europe and return to the warmth and plenty of South Africa.

Vivian French is a full-time author and storyteller. Lisa Flather won the Mother Goose Award for Illustration for Where the Great Bear Watches and is the illustrator of What is the Truth? Karin Littlewood is the illustrator of Chanda and the Mirror of Moonlight.
Ages 5-8. Part of French's Fantastic Journey series, this picture book explores the wonder of animal migration for young children. In spring a man in England smiles to see that the swallows have returned to the nests they left on the farm. Their eggs hatch, and the babies grow strong. As the cold weather begins, the flocks leave and travel over France to Spain and then across the Sahara to southern Africa, where it's spring and a woman smiles to see that "the swallows are back." They fly more than 150 miles a day for six weeks, a total distance of more than 6,000 miles. French writes in the present tense with a quiet immediacy and no histrionics ("Some birds do not make it"), focusing on a few individual birds that are part of the flock. The drama is in Littlewood's double-page watercolor paintings from the swallows' viewpoint, close-up in the nest, and then winging across the globe from home to home. Hazel Rochman
