Beavers, written in the very readable style for which Dr. Leonard Lee Rue is well-known, presents an engaging look at the life of beavers around the world. Focusing mainly on the North American beaver, Dr. Rue introduces you to the beaver’s way of life, one season at a time.
You’ll learn about the beaver’s building projects (dams, lodges, burrows, channels, canals, and more), how they give birth and raise their young, and the relationship between beavers and humans.

Dr. Leonard Lee Rue III (Honorary Doctorate) is the author of numerous books on wildlife and is one of the most published wildlife photographers in the country. Dr. Rue was awarded the Outdoor Writers’ Association of America’s “Jade of Chiefs Award” for conservation writings, as well as the North American Nature Photographers’ Association highest award, “The Lifetime Achievement in Nature Photography Award.”
The only species that alters its environment more than the beaver is our own--what other animal can take a trickling creek and turn it into a lake? The second largest rodent in the world, beavers share with the rest of that family gnawing incisor teeth. These are their main tools for cutting the trees that form their dams, homes, and the bulk of the animal's diet. Rue, a well-known wildlife photographer and author of numerous books on animals written for the general reader, presents a very nice introduction to a familiar North American mammal. The first chapter introduces the beaver, describing the physical attributes of this highly aquatic animal. The succeeding chapter is perhaps the most interesting, as it shows how beavers build their dams and lodges and the adjustments they must make to tailor these edifices to local conditions. Other chapters follow beavers through the four seasons. Finally, chapters on our relationships with beavers and how to watch beavers complete the text. Beautifully illustrated with the author's marvelous photographs. Nancy Bent
