Synopsis
Both a journey in the footsteps of others and an account of the author's own experiences with the spectacular wildlife: from Emperor penguins to skuas, which prey on their chicks, to leopard seals and the Orcas. Through his reflections and observations upon the waste of irridescent ice and snow, the book captures the spirit of this place, now the only uninhabited continent and the last place on earth to be explored. He recounts the famous stories of the early south polar expeditions, visiting the sites of their triumphs and disasters. Starting from the Magellan Straits, he moves on to South Georgia, Elephant Island, where the refugees from the Endurance sheltered ona strip of beach for months, and Peter 1 Island before venturing into the Weddell Sea from where the expeditions of Shackleton, Scott and Amundsen set forth.
