Synopsis
Building on experiences from children's everyday lives, this book is on wind is part of a series which shows how weather is one of the wonders of the world around us. It teaches children about the wind - how we can't see it, yet it forms patterns in the sand, carries pollen from plant to plant, and spreads forest fires. There is also a section on measuring the wind using weather balloons, weather forecasts, satellites and wind socks. Different parts of the world have varying degrees of wind such as monsoons in India, chinook in North America and the sirocco, which is a dusty wind that blows off the Sahara Desert in North Africa. Harmful winds that fan forest fires, and winds that blow pollutants from a polluted area to another causing acid rain are described. Finally, the book introduces the concept of wind as an element to be feared and respected, as seen by Chinese myths and Greek reliefs on buildings.
