About the Author

Ken MacLeod is the author of many acclaimed SF novels, including The Stone Canal, The Cassini Division, and Newton’s Wake. His latest novel, Learning the World, won the Prometheus Award (his third) and was a finalist for the Hugo Award. He lives with his family near Edinburgh, Scotland.

From Booklist

In a post-9/11 world just around the corner, attacks on American soil have been followed in horrific succession by a flu pandemic, war against Iran, and an escalating wave of executions throughout the world that are televised daily on a pirate channel. Now what is apparently a tactical nuclear weapon has been detonated on an American-occupied air base in Scotland. While conducting spying operations for French intelligence, British citizen James Travis immediately becomes a terror suspect, as does his daughter, peace activist Roisin, because of carrying illicit photos of the weapon before it exploded. A multilayered story line alternates Travis' efforts to evade UK authorities, Roisin's capture and interrogation, and a propaganda war between a clandestine disinformation team and a notorious Internet blogger seeking the truth hidden in a spiderweb of spin. A master of politically charged sf, MacLeod channels our contemporary preoccupation with terrorism into an engulfing stream of espionage and international intrigue. Although the occasional sf trope may baffle genre outsiders, McLeod's speculative thriller ought to grab political junkies and spy fiction buffs as well as his sf fans. Hardback: 9½" x 6¼". Condition: Near Fine: Small signs of wear. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Cover Art: Concept 60 Seven (illustrator). 1st Edition. © 2007: A stand-alone novel by Ken MacLeod. 1st edition, 1st printing:- Synopsis: Fighting has spread across the Middle East and Central Asia to the borders of China. In the US, refugees from climate-change disasters subsist in FEMA camps. Images of official executions circulate on the internet like al Qaeda videos. State agencies sponsor conspiracy theories as cover-ups. As the troops of the last superpower stand astride the last of the oil, China and Russia aren't the only states considering their options: certain nations of Old Europe are quietly preparing for the worst. James Travis is a middle-aged middle manager in a software company. He has a son in the army, a daughter in a peace-protest camp outside a USAF base and a compromising relationship with a foreign intelligence service. When his cover is blown hours before a nuclear explosion destroys the base, Travis, his son and his daughter are all in serious trouble. Roisin Travis knows that what exploded was no ordinary weapon - and not just because her brother had warned her that something strange and dangerous was on its way. As his daughter discovers that a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing, James Travis flees north through an England torn between the US and Europe, and divided by its own dark suspicions. As the spooks and disinformation specialists focus their efforts on his capture, Travis knows that all it will take is one mistake and his only memorial will be another grainy video on - The Execution Channel:- Review(s): Praise for Ken MacLeod: "The modern-day George Orwell" - SFX / "Stunningly assured, inventive and intelligent" - Iain M Banks / "A hectic ride, through slaloms of audacious complexity, irreverent ingenuity and paradox as purposeful as it is playful" - Guardian / "Magnificent" - Starburst / "The wit and thrust are like a needle shower" - Mail On Sunday / "Intelligent, witty and politically challenging" - New Scientist / "MacLeod simply gets better and better. SF writing doesn't come more accomplished than this" - Starlog:- (original cost £17.99). Seller Inventory # 21.126.00003
