These early stories, first published together in 1917, show Wodehouse perfecting his craft. Characters include a talking dog, a private eye who wants to be an actor, a bank clerk who cannot dance, an ugly policeman, a baseball-mad businessman, and a black cat. The star attraction of the volume for most readers will probably be ‘Extricating Young Gussie’, the first story to feature Jeeves, though in a minor role. His employer, Bertie (furnished with an Aunt Agatha but no surname) had not yet, like Wodehouse himself, ‘appreciated the man’s qualities’. All the stories, however, bear the unmistakable imprint of the author’s comic genius.

Anglo-American wit, short-story writer, dramatist and lyricist, educated at Dulwich College and chiefly noted as the creator of the efficient butler, Jeeves. He wrote more than 90 books and more than 20 film scripts and collaborated on more than 30 plays and musical comedies. His major works include Psmith in the City (1910), Very Good Jeeves (1930), The Butler Did It (1957), Bachelors Anonymous (1974), O, Kay (1926) and Rosalie (1928).
When this collection of novelettes was published in 1917, Wodehouse had already been in print for 15 years-yet he was still at the dawn of his prolific career. Elements that would catch fire in later works first appear here, most notably Jeeves the Butler and Bertie Wooster's formidable Aunt Agatha, "who had an eye like a man-eating fish." Frederick Davidson has read some of Wodehouse's longer works, but he's better here, mostly because the female characters are limited. He has an almost cynical British voice, yet his own good humor comes through as he nearly drawls the finer points of the comic narrative. D.W. (c) AudioFile, Portland, Maine
