This is an updated and enlarged edition of this guide, first published in 1983. It now contains entries describing approximately 1000 buildings, streets, or areas in London, arranged by city section. Coverage concentrates on the center, with "only exceptional" buildings from outer London included. A brief but informative introduction outlines London's architectural history since Roman times, and entries for each area are listed in chronological order, accompanied by a small black-and-white photo. The brief descriptions point out significant features and provide a refreshing frankness that reflects the opinions of the authors (both architects) on various architectural styles. The detailed area maps and index also ensure the book's usefulness as a tour guide. Highly recommended for architectural and travel collections in both public and academic libraries.
