9781841957227: How We Should Rule Ourselves

Synopsis

This pamphlet is for anyone alarmed by the present British government.

It argues that the component nations of the United Kingdom can become true democracies only by declaring themselves republics.

The authors are Alasdair Gray, writer of fiction and pamphlets such as Why Scots Should Rule Scotland, and Adam Tomkins, Professor of Public Law in the University of Glasgow and author of Public Law and Our Republican Constitution.

Both are committed republicans.

About the Author

Alasdair Gray is an old, asthmatic Glaswegian who lives by painting, writing and book design. He is currently working on a book about his visual art, A Life in Pictures, copiously illustrated, to be published by Canongate in 2008.

Adam Tomkins is Professor of Public Law at the University of Glasgow, and English author of Public Law (2003) and Our Republican Constitution (2005).

Review

This book makes the case for republican reform robustly and breathlessly. (Observer)

Their pamphlet is small, emotive and disingenuously partial, but it's also lively and timely and it should at least get discussions started. (Independent on Sunday)
