Orphaned at the age of twelve, Alice Openshaw is forced to work as a servant in a class-ridden society. However, her harsh experiences only serve to fire her indomitable spirit. Winds of the Day spans both World Wars and traces Alice's moves between Manchester, Cardiff and London. It is the timeless beauty of Cornwall and Alice's home, Dros-y-Mor that are central to her story as she struggles to come to terms with a rapidly changing modern world.

About the Author:
Howard Spring was born in Cardiff, where he began his literary career as a newspaper errand boy. He became a reporter on the Manchester Guardian and developed a love for the city which would become the setting for several of his novels. It was not long before Spring took over the job of literary critic on the Evening Standard from J B Priestley and on moving to Cornwall at the outset of World War II he became literary critic of Country Life. His most well-known novel, Fame Is The Spur, the story of a Labour politician's rise to power, was filmed by the Boulting Brothers and he continued to write until his death in 1965.
